Tourism sector gears for festive season

THE tourism industry in Victoria Falls is gearing up for increased business in the forthcoming festive season, which is associated with increased arrivals especially during Christmas and New Year holidays.

While the period December to March is regarded as a low season in terms of arrivals, the Christmas and New Year holidays are usually a hive of activity as families and groups travel for holiday.

Hospitality Association of Zimbabwe Matabeleland North chair, Mr Anald Musonza, said this year’s festive season holiday is a litmus test for the industry as it is the first after relaxation of Covid-19 induced travel restrictions.

“Our industry is coming back from a battered travel market in the last two years and has seen an excellent recovery,” he said.

Victoria Falls is Zimbabwe’s prime resort destination and boasts of unique leisure and tourism activities including the Falls.

Victoria Falls Town Clerk, Mr Ronnie Dube, said the local authority had also made necessary arrangements in preparation for arrival of tourists.

This includes making sure basic services are readily available.

“We are ready to welcome our visitors so that they enjoy the tranquillity we have as a destination. We are prepared in terms of taking care of our visitors,” said Mr Dube.

He said the council is adding another refuse truck to its fleet to be able to collect refuse and keep a clean environment.
Mr Dube said the post Covid-19 era had seen business picking its pieces and this is confirmed by council’s improved revenue collection which increased from less than 40 percent to 55 percent. – @ncubeleon
