Tracking my old ‘celebs’

IN one week’s time it will be school vacation again. I hope you found WINNING THE ENGLISH LEARNING BATTLE interesting and useful.
The column(s) and the author are with you in it all the way.

I am inviting students I have featured in my columns before to come and see me (at The Manica Post or private office at number 45 Second Street).

You are my “celebs” boys and girls. I featured you because you were achievers in one way or another. Some of you were essay-writing award winners, others were academic stars . . . with strings of As and Bs, 14-15 pointers at A-Level, future writers or authors, poets, etc. I am embarking on a follow-up programme, tracking you down to find out where you are now, what you are up to and if you have learnt or discovered new skills or philosophies of life.

Let’s talk.
Nicole Matatu where are you? What are you doing? Any new wisdom? Trevor James-ex Alpha Institute, Zandile, Onai-many more from Alpha Institute, where are you? Loveson Sango (Gaza High, Chipinge); Lawrence Bore (Marist Brothers, Nyanga); Tariro Sigauke (Old Tsambe (Santa)); Mercy Chedza (Kriste Mambo); Sandra Saungweme and Chris J. Tunha (Msani High School, Chipinge); Millicent Kandido (All Souls Mission);  Little Polite Maengamhuru; Thandolwenkosi Rumhungwe (brilliant writer-inspiring poet, Chipinge High School). Where are you? Please, get in touch!

Texts Vimbainashe Mutsago from Rusape: “I was at Kriste Mambo last year. Thank you sir for your help! I obtained 13 points and a B in Literature. I have enrolled at UZ. Thank you sir for inspiring me! Stay blessed.

Reply: “I love that. The best music in my ears! God bless u at varsity. Be a good girl. The world is a jungle out there.”

You see! That is the idea. Let us keep in touch. I also know there are many new “celebs” who want to see me during this August holiday. I do have time for you.

We can talk and if you so wish, have the interview published on STUDENTS SPEAK.

Of course I will not be keen to know your favourite food, soccer team or hobbies. Those do not constitute a hero or heroine for me.

I want to know what you have achieved, what wisdom you want to share with your peers, any guidance or constructive advice concerning your or their core business which is education, or indeed your social life.

What are some of the dangers threatening to derail your or their focus and shatter your or their dreams?

What answers do you have for your challenges and problems, your fears and anxieties in the complex world you live today?

I will also accept samples of written short stories or essays…compositions if you like. I love reading them and promise to publish the best ones.

I will also carefully outline why I think they are masterpieces. Purposeful, constructive criticism! Not attention seeking or self-advertising! We write to teach others and learn from them. That is the idea.

For every piece of work I publish, I will donate a free copy of the week’s Manica Post. (STRICTLY STUDENTS ONLY!)
