Transforming your garden with tropical trees

Andrew Mangwarara

THE sprawling suburb of Madokero is home to numerous beautiful small gardens where residents have embraced the use of palms in their beautification endeavours.

Palms are a versatile group of plants with several advantages when used in landscaping projects.

They instantly create a tropical effect, transforming any arid landscape into a lush green oasis.

Their low-maintenance nature makes them ideal for busy homeowners, as they require minimal care.

Unlike many other plant species, palms provide a garden with uniformity, growing in perfect symmetry.

This allows for the creation of well-ordered spaces, such as at entrances or driveways.

These plants have a non-invasive root structure, making them suitable for planting near buildings or swimming pools where large trees can cause significant damage.

You can find a suitable palm for almost any situation, whether you prefer tall or short, bushy or lean and bright green or golden.

There is always a palm to match your needs.

When designing your space, consider these basic questions: Is it the front yard, backyard, driveway or do you want to block a view or add glamour? Next, choose a theme for what you want to achieve.

Do you envision a tropical island, a multi-level view, or simply a striking centrepiece?

You can even line a driveway or pathway with palms to add elegance. Perhaps you want to create an oasis where people can relax in refreshing pools.

After conducting your assessment, choose locations for the palms that offer good all-round views. Check for any limitations, such as walls, excessive shade or hard surfaces.

The next step is to select the appropriate palms.

Consider the required space, whether it is a full-sun or shaded position and if the palm’s size will suit the space. After choosing the main palm, you can add smaller palms to enhance the area.

Remember that it is easier to plant than to remove, so avoid overdoing it.

While it is a relatively simple process, it can be overwhelming. Consider seeking professional advice to avoid costly renovations.
