GOVERNMENT is working on building resilient health systems by investing in health infrastructure, technology and workforce development to deal with challenges that have confronted the sector.

Speaking during the launch of the second edition of the Public Health Symposium on Thursday, Health and Child Care Minister, Dr Douglas Mombeshora said this will address challenges of health professionals’ brain drain and ensure infrastructure and sustainable funding for health programs.

“We are also scaling up community health programs, focusing on maternal and child health, and non-communicable diseases to leverage resources, expertise and innovation,” said Dr Mombeshora.

From the three-day symposium, the ministry aims to tap into the expertise shared and leverage on innovative ideas and strategic recommendations to boost the public health ecosystem.

The symposium brings together stakeholders who include public health professionals, policy makers and researchers to identify solutions for pressing public health challenges.

This year’s edition is running under the theme ‘Re-imagining our public health’.

Insights shared feeds from Government’s development strategies such as the National Health Strategy (2021-2025), National Development Strategy 1 (NDS1) and Vision 2030.

These policy initiatives speak to strengthening the health sector. Building on this, Zimbabwe has made significant strides in improving the health sector.

The national response to the cholera outbreak was robust, with enhanced surveillance and response activities.

Dr Mombeshora said the ministry envisions a future where every citizen has access to quality and affordable health care, regardless of geographical location or socio-economic background.

He urged delegates to harness the power of collective expertise to re-imagine public health as a collective.

“Your expertise will help us navigate complex challenges, optimise resource allocation, and prioritise evidence-based decision-making,” he said.
