Turning pain into punchlines: How comedy became path to healing

BULAWAYO comedian Frank Chirisa (24) has opened up on how he manages to create humour and how comedy helps him in his own life.

In an interview with B-Metro, Chirisa said the moment he sits down to write about a bad experience, he heals through writing about it.“Most of my jokes come from my shortcomings because my humour is mostly focused on self-depreciation.

My lowest moments help me come up with golden jokes. I talk about my suicide attempts, failures and businesses, falling into debt, family pressures, and heartbreak,” said Chirisa. Chirisa said that being fired from Umahlekisa Comedy last year was his lowest point, which motivated him to start his own comedy club.

He added that when his grandfather died, the first thing that came to his mind was a joke, as comedy helps him heal. Chirisa also mentioned that his comedy style was primarily based on observation, sarcasm, dark humour, imagination, and self-depreciation.

“Talking about my past mistakes is me taking responsibility for my actions, and being honest with myself helps me heal,” Chirisa said. He said as a result of this, people come to him after his shows, opening up about similar experiences.

“If you are experiencing similar problems to mine, I encourage you to talk to someone you trust, as a problem shared is a problem halved. Do things that make you happy and go to church,” he said.
