Two Chitungwiza councillors suspended

procurement and finance committees respectively.
Chitungwiza acting district administrator, Mr Hillary Dzavanhu, confirmed the suspensions yesterday. He said the procurement and finance committees were in shambles hence the decision to suspend the committee chairpersons to pave way for investigations.

Two others, special interest councillors Tichaona Chapfika and Brighton Chirongwe, were fired from the council last week. Local Government, Rural and Urban Development Minister Ignatius Chombo, who appointed them, effected the dismissals.

Mr Dzavanhu said the councillors were still to be replaced.
Chitungwiza should have four special interest councillors.

A resuscitation team headed by Manicaland provincial administrator, Mr Fungai Mbetsa, is currently helping restructure systems at the council after a collapse of service delivery.
Chitungwiza is the only council in Zimbabwe that is led by independent councillors. The councillors were fired by the MDC-T on allegations of corruption. The party through its provincial structures has been making moves to absorb selected councillors back into its ranks while others were contemplating joining Zanu-PF.
