Ministry of Water Resources Development and Management, is targeting all borehole owners, companies, drillers and water bottling companies.
In a statement, Zinwa urged borehole owners and future borehole owners to register their boreholes.
Zinwa Ground Water Department manager Mr Sam Sunguro said registration would enable effective monitoring and management of underground water resources.
“Ground water levels are decreasing so we need to keep track of the water resources while water quality is deteriorating as the result of lower water levels.”
Zinwa was worried by increased water contamination in Zimbabwe.
The registration programme would help the authority come up with the number of boreholes in Zimbabwe, how the water is used and how safe it is for use in communities.
“Applicants would need to pay a nominal fee for monitoring purposes and this would benefit communities than the authority.
“Those who do not to register or apply for a permit will face penalties or prosecution for not complying with the regulations” he said.
