TYRA WACHES TYLA COME OF AGE AT BET AWARDS

THIS was about Tyra watching Tyla come of age at the Peacock Centre in Los Angeles on Sunday night.

Tyra Chikochi, who is also known as Madam Boss, had a ringside seat as she watched South African singer Tyla win big at this year’s BET Awards.

Madam Boss will be hoping that when she travels for the BET Awards again, there will be a Zimbabwean winner.

After all, she watched Tyla and Makhadzi win big at the BET Awards, which have been dubbed “culture’s biggest night.”

Tyla was named Best New Artist and Best International Act.

“This is such a gift to be here. I want to dedicate this one to Africa,” Tyla said during her acceptance speech, wearing a slinky black dress.

“I want to dedicate this one to all the African superstars before me. Africa to the world!”

She went on to give an electrifying performance of her hit song ‘Jump’ featuring United States rapper Gunna and Jamaican dancehall DJ Skillibeng.

Dancers wearing tiger print bodysuits – a nod to her fanbase she affectionately calls Tygers – opened her act, which also included a gigantic elephant statue and performers on stilts.

The BET Awards are an American award show founded in 2001 by the Black Entertainment Television network to celebrate and honour black and underrepresented people in the entertainment industry.

Makhadzi won the Viewer’s Choice: Best New International Act.

“I started music from the streets and today I’m here. My dream just came true. I’m just speechless.

“This is the best birthday ever,” she said.

She stunned in a fun pink ensemble for the red carpet.

American superstar Usher delivered an emotional speech as he accepted a lifetime achievement prize.

The singer-songwriter told the audience that “getting here has definitely not been easy, but it has been worth it”.

The 45-year-old also picked up the award for best R&B and hip-hop artist at the ceremony.

“This life achievement award, I don’t know, man, is it too early to receive it? Cause I’m still running and gunning like I did when I was eight years old.

“I was trying to make sense of this name a man gave me that didn’t stick around because he didn’t love me.

“You have to have a forgiving heart to understand the true pitfalls and hardships of a black man in America and my father, he was a product of that.

“This is the year of the father. Stand up for your daughters and sons and lead.

“This one is for all of the men out there being generals to their sons, and motivation for our future black leaders – young men.” H-Metro Reporter/BBC
