THIS year’s search for the country’s most hideous man, the Mr Ugly pageant is spreading to Gwanda and Chiredzi. Ugly men in the two small towns can now smile as the show has come to their door steps. The pageant, initially   a   brainchild   of   a   group   of   people in Beitbridge, has been held in the border town and Harare only.

Show organiser and one of the pageant founders, Lovemore Chonzi, said they had leased their licence to two individuals in Chiredzi and Gwanda to hold preliminary shows before the final showdown in Beitbridge.

“It is our dream to see the pageant expanding to other parts of Matabeleland South Province.

“Chiredzi is not in Matabeleland but it is very close to Beitbridge and as such we decided to have a contest there,” said Chonzi.
The inaugural Mr Ugly contest which some found very funny and intriguing, was held in 2009.

He said a total of 12 men would contest in the finals of the pageant to be held in August.

“We will have a total of six men, the first three winners from the two towns and six others from Beitbridge.

“We have also given them time to fundraise for the preliminary shows so that they do a perfect job,” he said.

He said previous winners in the competition were welcome in this year’s edition as they were still “ugly.”

“The contest is open to all individuals, even Masvinu, the Harare holder of the title is free to come and take part provided he humbles himself and not come here with a mentality that he is from a big city,” said Chonzi.

The pageant has grown over the years from the initial show and has been “hijacked by some greedy people” according to Chonzi.

“This is not a money-making project. It’s just a show for people to enjoy but some people want to make money out of it,” he said.

He said they were looking forward to inviting some of the big names in the country’s entertainment scene namely Sulumani Chimbetu and Jah Prayzah.

He added that they had come up with competitive prizes for the winners.
