RISING sungura outfit, Unique Giants that consists of five bandsmen including two visually-impaired members is confident that their newly-released debut album, Tombodyawo will scale them to dizzy heights.
The group, though new in the entertainment scene, boasts of vast experienced guitarist and former Zimbabwe Clear Sounds member, Themba Kupfembudu.
The now defunct Zimbabwe Clear Sounds rocked Zim radio airwaves decades ago with hits such as Mai vaGeorgina.
Themba, a visually-impaired singer, is one of the most experienced, but underrated song writers in Zimbabwe.
Other members of the group are Paul Mavhunda, George Mahuni, Rodgers Chibvuma, Melusi Siziba and Godfrey Kupfembudu.
In an interview, the group’s secretary, Godfrey Kupfembudu, said their new album carries potential hits that many would fall in love with.
“We gave each other an opportunity to showcase their own talents.
“Every band member wrote his own song. We are a team of talented guitarists who have just stormed into the music scene with a distinct sound. Our music is a fusion of sungura and rhumba and appeals to all age groups. Themba and Paul’s experience in the music industry was very vital and it made the album a stellar one,” he said.
The group was formed in 2012 and all members of the outfit are based in the sprawling high-density suburb of Hobhouse.
The dynamic duo of Themba and Paul who are both visually impaired and vital cogs in the make-up of the group, reminds many of fallen music heroes who were visually impaired, but talented and innovative, the likes of Fanyana Dube, Chamunorwa Nebeta and Paul “Dr Love” Matavire.
Songs carried on the project are Simba Remunamato, Murume Wangu, Paidamoyo, Dambudzo, Mbune, Mwana Wangu, Marufu and Ka1.
It was recorded at Shed Studios by veteran engineer Peter “Cool Dude” Muparutsa.
