ZIMBABWEAN artists, both within the country and in the diaspora, have always played a vital role in advancing the national vision through their music.

They have always deployed their talents in explaining complex economic and political ideals and concepts that shape the development narrative in a simplified, leisurely and yet powerful.

Their work continues to serve as a powerful tool for fostering patriotism, unity and conscientising the public about national development programmes.

One such musician who has taken it upon himself to interpret the national vision and what it seek to achieve is Mavusani.

He is no stranger to the patriotism genre and is not apologetic about his support for national development programmes wrought by the Second Republic hence his latest release ‘Amendment Bill 3’ where he implores people to support it for the fulfulment of vision 2030.

Prior to the release of Amendment Bill 3, he collaborated with Zimbabwean artists based in South Africa to release a single with a beat that has a bias towards the youths in order to capture their attention to the message on his single called ‘Our Zimbabwe.’

The Matabeleland-based band, “Mavusani and the Chimurenga Vocalists’ new release features Zimbabwean artist Zandile Mazithulela, popularly known as Dj Zandi Maaz, who is based in South Africa. The three-step song – Our Zimbabwe, has received a positive reaction from Zimbabweans and supporters abroad.

In an interview, Mavusani, renowned for his hit track “Development,” shared more about his musical background and his aspirations. He said his two latest projects are inspired by the need to deliver a message of unity and patriotism to the youths and everyone towards the achievement of national aspirations.

He explained that his journey in music began in the early 2000s, inspired by traditional Chimurenga music and the vibrant sounds of Zimbabwean urban contemporary genres. Over the years, he has honed his craft, blending traditional rhythms with modern influences to create a unique sound that resonates with a diverse audience.

Mavusani described his latest release, “Our Zimbabwe” (remix version), as a three-step genre that primarily targets the youth.

He characterises the song as a fusion of house, amapiano and traditional music, aiming to energise and inspire the younger generation. He emphasised that his goal is to motivate the youth to participate actively in nation-building, drawing on President Mnangagwa’s mantra, “Ilizwe lakhiwa ngabanikazi balo” or “Nyika inovakwa nevhene vayo” — a nation is built by its owners.

“The youths should not be passengers in national development discourse. They should play an active part. They should in fact lead the processes because the future of the country belongs to them. They therefore need to be informed so that they also make informed decisions and choices premised on the foundation of patriotism,” he said.

Mavusani believes that young people have a pivotal role to play in shaping Zimbabwe’s future and should be empowered to do so.

Beyond his music, Mavusani holds the position of Youth League National Deputy Secretary for Disabled, reflecting his commitment to inclusive development. His songs are increasingly popular among young Zimbabweans, who often engage with his music through dance challenges on social media platforms such as TikTok and Facebook.

Mavusani, a prominent Chimurenga Vocalist, is scheduled to perform at the upcoming Independence Gala celebrations at Minda High School in the Matobo District, further showcasing his dedication to promoting Zimbabwean culture and unity through his artistry.

Through their artistic endeavours, Zimbabwean musicians continue to embody the spirit of the liberation struggle, using music as a platform to inspire patriotism and drive the country’s ongoing journey towards unity and development.
