A National University of Science and Technology (Nust) Professor in the Medicine Department has been dragged to court for allegedly beating up his wife and children, causing them to flee their home.

The situation at their home spiralled out of control after Professor Greanious Mavondo’s wife allegedly stumbled upon messages of a romantic nature that her husband had allegedly received from another woman on his cellphone.

His wife fumed after seeing the romantic chats and confronted him.

She never knew that things would turn for the worse as her husband bashed her. She screamed for help prompting her children to intervene to restrain their father. But he turned on them and beat them up.

As if that was not enough, Mavondo hurled insults at his wife. Fearing for their lives Mavondo’s wife and children fled their home.

After that, the woman applied for a court protection order to prevent her husband from physically and verbally abusing her and their children.

In her affidavit which read in part, she said:

“The respondent and I are married. We reside at our matrimonial home in Morningside suburb in Bulawayo. For the past few days, Mavondo has been physically and emotionally abusing me because I enquired about text messages of a romantic nature which I found on his phone. The messages were from another woman. While he was physically attacking me our children intervened to restrain him but he assaulted them. I pray that this court will grant us the protection order which will pave the way for us to return home and protect us from the respondent (Mavondo).”

Mavondo did not oppose the application.

The presiding magistrate, Challenge Mahembe, granted Mavondo’s wife and children a protection order.

Mavondo was ordered not to physically, verbally and emotionally abuse his wife and their children. He was also ordered not to act in any manner likely to cause a breach of the applicant’s peace and their children. The order is valid for five years.
