STEALING his employer’s vehicle and driving it to Ngundu Growth Point earned an unlicensed teenager a six-month jail term last week.
The teenager, Witness Mutasa (19), was convicted by senior Mutare magistrate Mrs Sekesayi Chiundura for contravening Chapter 13:11 of the Road Traffic Act (driving a vehicle without a licence).
The court heard that Witness drove his employer’s vehicle, Nissan Caravan, Registration Number ACE 8404, without a valid driver’s licence.
Prosecuting, Mr Cuthbert Bhosha said Richard Chinyandura (22) and Witness were employed by Latwin Chidziya, who is also a police officer, as driver and conductor respectively.
They were tasked to ply the City-Chikanga route and were given a daily target of $80.
They failed to meet the target on the first day resulting in Richard quitting the job.
He left the vehicle in Witness’s custody who took advantage of the situation and drove to Ngundu Growth Point without the owner’s knowledge and consent.
Chidziya made a police report of the missing vehicle and investigations were made.
The vehicle was finally recovered at Ngundu Growth Point by police officers from Masvingo.
Witness had changed the vehicle’s number plates as well as erasing the owner’s name and home address.
He had also sold the spare wheel for $70, but it was later recovered.
