MEDICAL waste comprising countless used syringes, blood stained cotton wool and tablets were found dumped outside a house in Nketa 9 suburb in Bulawayo on Monday morning, sparking fears that there was a backyard abortion clinic in the area.
Residents that spoke to B-Metro said from time to time they see these things dumped carelessly. They decide that enough is enough andA have taken the matter to the police.
a?We are calling for police and council officials to institute investigations so that whoever is responsible for the dumping of the items should be brought to book. As residents we suspect that there is someone from the suburb who is running a backyard surgery.
a?Chances are high that the person is employed as a health worker and is stealing drugs from the hospital to run the backyard clinic,a? said a resident who identified herself as Mrs Mpofu.
Mrs Mpofu said the person might be the one who is reportedly linked to performing abortions on a number of girls and women from the suburb.
A furious Thabani Moyo said whoever dumped the items was not only putting the lives of their children in danger but of residents as well.
a?As you know diseases can be transmitted through needles, so for someone to throw off these used syringes and vials of blood in the open is not good at all as it exposes our children to infectious diseases. There are proper ways of disposing these used needles so that our childrenas lives would not be at risk,a? he said.
When B-Metro visited the suburb later in the day the items had already been removed by one of the residents who is believed to be a nurse with a local health institution.
