As has been the tradition of the festival, non-traditional rugby playing schools took part on the opening day but there was an unusually high turn out compared to the previous years.
The opening day was also spiced with action from the girls’ schools that saw coach Chekisi Vurayai’s Roosevelt beating fancied Eaglesvale 10-0.
George Stark, who were also amongst some of the girls’ teams that took part at the festival last year were edged 5-0 by Girls High School in the final of the girls games.
But there were huge scores in the boy’s games that showed some mismatches in pairing of teams as Mutare Boys’ High went on to thrash Ellis Robins 50-8.
Prince Edward’s second string side took on Hillcrest B team with the hosts winning 28–12. As the number of teams that are taking part in the event has risen to 154 this year, there was need to use more fields and this saw Avenue and Chapel Fields hosting senior games while Rhodes Fields was for the Under-16 teams.
The afternoon games at the Jubilee Field were exciting with most spectators glued to the centre field as they enjoyed the action.
Twelve girls’ teams will be playing and regional teams from neighbours South Africa and Botswana.
The tournament which is aimed at promoting rugby in schools and creates a wide player base and has become the initial stage for selecting the side that represents Zimbabwe at the Craven Week.
