THERE he goes.
Who?
Farai Jere. And his money.
Makepekepe yesterday took to the park against Flame Lily at Lafarge with Mark Mathe a dead man walking.
Not even a miracle can save the passionate coach from the axe now.
A breakdown in relations between Mathe and a cabal led by disgruntled skipper Hardlife Zvirekwi has seen the former Highlanders coach losing the dressing room.
When you lose the dressing room you have lost the job, lost the right to coach a team.
The bad news for Mathe is that Jere appears to have also made his decision and will soon announce his handpicked coach.
Some say it will be Kallisto Pasuwa. I said some.
Makepekepe’s first round Chibuku Super Cup exit on penalties at the hands of an ultra defensive ZPC Kariba rubbed Jere the wrong way.
He came out blazing a day after the Heroes holidays, telling us Mathe and his team of Brenna Msiska and Tostao Kwashi were treading a fine line.
That the cup exit came a week after Makepekepe had fallen 0-1 to Harare City made it unbearable for Jere and some Green Machine faithful such as Mupostori, Zisupa, Nyathi 99 and the dancing queen Monica.
For Jere the blame is squarely on Mathe’s doorstep, he made it clear as he issued a public two match ultimatum last week.
In his wisdom, or lack thereof, the Caps United majority shareholder found it advisable to tell all and sundry that the next two matches, yesterday’s tie with Flame Lily and the home game against Tsholotsho, would determine the coach’s future.
It’s a move that must have heaped additional pressure on Mathe.
However, if the truth is to be told as it should, Leonard Tsipa cost Caps United a place in the Chibuku Super Cup quarter finals.
His moment of madness, when Makepekepe were firmly in the driving seat, left Nomore Musundire with little option but to brandish that red one.
Prior to his diabolic tackle of Dennis Dauda and his sending off, Tsipa was behaving like a spoilt preschool kid, exchanging words with ZPC Kariba goalie Tendai Hove soon after he had converted the penalty that restored parity.
For a veteran of the game and a man who at some point wore the arm band, Tsipa’s behavior was inexcusable and if Mathe gets fired, as we all expect, the bald headed striker will owe the gaffer an apology.
But what is it with Caps United?
They can’t seem to have both can they, money and good results?
During the awful Twine Phiri era, Makepekepe ground out results and everyone said “with money this team would do some amazing things, look what they do on empty coffers”.
Now Jere has brought in some dole but the Green Machine just ain’t firing.
Well Jere is not doling it out as much as he used to but Caps United are better off financially than they were at the beginning of the season.
However, the results seem to have fled through the window the moment the dole came around.
Zvirekwi makes his life hard
Hardlife Zvirekwi’s decision to go home after being hauled off at half-time during the Cup clash with ZPC Kariba was another low point in the player’s career.
His form has dipped badly and he cannot afford to go about thinking he’s untouchable.
The only reason he has been featuring in the first XI is the armband he wore. That is now gone and he might as well get used to life on the bench at best and out of the team at worst.
It’s a hard life.
