POLICE in Victoria Falls have dropped the hammer on public violence with a sweeping ban on carrying dangerous weapons, following a sharp rise in assaults, murders and property damage in the resort city and surrounding areas.
The crackdown, announced by Officer Commanding Victoria Falls District Chief Superintendent Sibulisiwe Sithole, comes under the Maintenance of Peace and Order Act (MOPA) and will run from 30 July to 31 October 2025.
> “The unanticipated acts of violence forced this office to invoke the Maintenance of Peace and Order Act,” said Chief Supt Sithole.
“It allows us to prohibit the carrying of dangerous weapons causing such acts involving the element of violence such as murder, assaults and malicious damage to property.”
The ban covers Victoria Falls, Jambezi and Kazungula, and includes weapons such as catapults, machetes, axes, knobkerries, swords, knives, daggers and any other traditional items considered a threat to public safety.
> “Any person failing to comply with such a prohibition order shall be guilty of an offence and liable to a fine not exceeding level five or imprisonment for six months or both,” she warned.
Police say the move is meant to restore law and order, with increased patrols and searches set to enforce the order.
Residents have been urged to cooperate as authorities tighten the grip on violence and restore peace in the usually serene city.
Victoria Falls just got serious. Leave your blades at home.
