VISUALLY IMPAIRED WOMAN VENTURES INTO MBIRA MUSIC

Mangaliso Kabulika

BEAUTY Ngwende, a visually impaired young woman, has made a foray into mbira music, releasing two singles titled Pasi rarohwa nenyundo and Une rudo.

The 22-year-old, who plays the nyunga nyunga type of mbira, drew inspiration from the late Chiwoniso Maraire, who used to perform at St Giles Special School.

Her songs, produced by Simplex, explore topics such as cultural erosion, dressing, behaviour and love, but her full musical potential is hindered by financial constraints.

“I want my music to be appreciated all over the world just like any other music.

“I have difficulties in sponsorship and promoters, which is a stumbling block to my career, but I hope to inspire others to pursue their passions fearlessly, regardless of challenges they face,” she said.

Beauty encouraged other visually impaired individuals to be proud of their talents and showcase them to the world, despite the challenges they face.
