Vuwa’s rollercoaster football journey

NGEZI Platinum Stars midfielder Walter Vuwa, once hailed as one of Zimbabwe’s most promising football talents, has experienced a career marked by soaring highs and crushing lows.

The forward, known for his electric pace, technical brilliance, and football intelligence, has seen his fortunes fluctuate dramatically over the past three seasons.

Vuwa burst onto the scene three seasons ago, in the 2021-2022, making an immediate impact at Ngezi Platinum Stars. His dazzling performances in his debut season earned him widespread acclaim, with many tipping him as a future star.

He marked his arrival with a thunderbolt volley against Bulawayo City. However, his meteoric rise was abruptly halted by a serious injury that side-lined him for the bigger part of the campaign two years ago, leaving his admirers wondering whether he could rediscover his best form.

But in 2023, Vuwa silenced doubters by bouncing back stronger than ever. He played a pivotal role in Ngezi Platinum’s championship campaign, contributing four goals and an impressive 13 assists.

His resurgence cemented his status as one of the league’s most dynamic forwards, and expectations were sky-high heading into the 2024 season.

However, the 2024 campaign proved to be another turbulent chapter in Vuwa’s career. While he started strongly, maintaining a regular spot in the starting line up and delivering impactful performances, his season took a sharp downturn in the second -half.

Allegations of indiscipline, coupled with a nagging injury, saw him fall out of favour with the coaching staff. The arrival of Tino Meke from GreenFuel further complicated Vuwa’s situation. Meke’s impressive form pushed Vuwa further down the pecking order, and the final blow came when he was omitted from Ngezi Platinum’s Caf squad.

This exclusion signalled a stark reality, Vuwa was no longer a key figure in the team’s plans. Despite these setbacks, Vuwa managed to contribute three goals and eight assists in the first-half of the season, reflecting his talent.

“Walter is a phenomenal talent, but football is as much about consistency and discipline as it is about skill,” said a source close to Ngezi Platinum.

“He needs to prove he can overcome these challenges if he wants to reclaim his place.”

At the start of the year, Vuwa was cleared off the books of Ngezi Platinum making him a free agent.

He has already tried his luck with traditional giants Dynamos, who intend to tie him down for three years.

The deal failed to see the light of the day due to disagreements between the two parties over contract terms and this has left the player clubless. But for Vuwa, he has vowed to redeem himself.

“Yes, I am a free agent and still looking for a team but I am hopeful that everything will be right,” said Vuwa.

“I am always ready to make opponents run and just waiting for the right call.

“A lot of things do happen in football and a lot of things get exaggerated. But I have managed to move on from the past and ready to set a new chapter.

“In all these seasons, I was just a first-half-season player, and faced challenges in the second half but I am ready to prove beyond of whom I am.

“Already my image was tarnished in one way or the other but I will do my talking on the football pitch and I am ready to shoot,” he said.
