THEODORE Roosevelt once said and I quote, “Do what you can, with what you have, where you are.” What you can do is succeed. What you have is a conducive environment and supportive staff. Where you are, and it’s the best place to be, is ALPHA INSTITUTE.
Salutations of the day to you all ladies and gentlemen! Our esteemed guests and fellow students! I’m sure you will agree with me that we’ve had a good day so far. My name is ZandileNyamangodo. I am the outgoing school captain.
Born in 2007 ALPHA INSTITUTE has functioned truly to this year’s theme: Transforming Character through Education. All sorts of people have walked through its doors. Married people, social outcasts, academic outcasts, need I go on? I came to this school in 2011 because I had done badly in my O Level examinations. Someone had said to me that independent colleges accept just anybody and nothing much was required of me.
Much to my surprise, Alpha Institute was a college much more than others. Assemblies, Debate and Public Speaking competitions, daily devotions! I soon enrolled for a Bible course VOP (Voice of Prophecy). That changed my life. Radically if I may add. It still is changing the lives of many in the school given the testimonies we hear each year at VOP graduations.
Alpha Institute has been changing the destinies of many students. Many of them enrol at the institute labelled and abandoned as failures by society. Apha transforms them academically and spiritually.
A case in point is Justice Mukwada, who had 5 Cs at O Level and no formal school would enrol him for A Level studies. Even his former school rejected him. Ladies and gentlemen, Justice attained 14 points and is currently studying in Algeria.
Onai Hara, former captain at Alpha Institute, is currently studying at the University of Zimbabwe.
She has been featured several times on ZBC because of the work she is doing championing the rights of deaf people. She is not deaf.
Trevor James, the 2012 captain, is currently studying at MSU and in December will be representing the country in Germany in a debate competition.
ShingiriraiManyengavana currently studying at Alpha Institute has appeared in the local talent show Star-Brite where his poem, Amai Vangu, took first prize in the Kwayedza High School Poetry Competition.
These are only a few examples of Alpha’s success stories. I had done badly in my O Level examinations. In 2012 I re-sat and passed with flying colours. Now in Upper 6, I can safely and confidently say my future is bright, thanks to Alpha.
Alpha has throughout the years been true to its values of Innovation, Integrity and Success.
I have enjoyed my time at Alpha. It has been a learning process for me. From the teaching and non-teaching staff! It has been a pleasure working with you all.
I have learnt a lot. My life has changed. Now I’m bolder, more confident and I can stand on my own responsibly.
Remember Theodore Roosevelt’s words: “Do the best you can, with what you have, where you are.” THANK YOU!
