THE Ministry of Veterans of the Liberation Struggle Affairs has launched an awareness campaign to provide vital assistance to the dependants of war heroes and heroines, ensuring their needs are met and their well-being is prioritised.

Last Friday, a campaign event was held in Nyamandlovu, Umguza district, where Commissioner Gladys Moyo, responsible for the Heroes’ Dependants Assistance department, addressed attendees.

She stated that the campaign underscores the Government’s commitment to supporting the families of those who made the ultimate sacrifice in attaining independence.

“It’s a poignant reminder that the bravery and selflessness of our war heroes and heroines have not been forgotten and that their loved ones will continue to receive the care and support they deserve,” she said. “The ministry’s efforts are a testament to the enduring spirit of gratitude and respect that our country has for its veterans. By assisting their dependants, the Government is not only acknowledging the sacrifices made by these brave individuals but also ensuring that their families can live with dignity and comfort.”

Commissioner Moyo explained that the campaign aims to address the various needs of the dependants, including access to education, healthcare, and economic empowerment. She described it as a comprehensive approach that recognises the diverse challenges faced by these families and seeks to provide them with the necessary tools to thrive.

“We are targeting especially those in marginalised areas, such as rural areas, where the uptake of such initiatives does not receive much attention. We have so far covered Lupane, Tsholotsho, and Bubi districts,” she revealed. “As we reflect on the sacrifices made by our war heroes and heroines, it’s essential to remember the profound impact their bravery has had on our nation. Their selflessness has given us the freedom to live our lives with dignity, to pursue our dreams, and to build a better future for ourselves and our children.”

Commissioner Moyo reiterated that the ministry’s awareness campaign is a reminder of the importance of honouring war heroes and heroines, not just in words but in deeds.

“By supporting their dependants, we are upholding the values of compassion, empathy, and gratitude that define us as a nation. As we move forward, it’s essential to continue supporting the ministry’s efforts and to spread awareness about the campaign. By doing so, we can ensure that the dependants of our war heroes and heroines receive the assistance they need, and that their sacrifices are never forgotten,” she emphasised.

Mrs Sikhululekile Ngwenya, the deputy chairperson for the widows of the war veterans association, credited President Mnangagwa’s intervention for making this possible.

“We are seeking to unite all dependants of war veterans. This is not for the benefit of certain individuals but for all children, widows, and widowers of war veterans. Many are struggling because they are not aware of this programme.

The Government is doing a sterling job in assisting the people,” said Mrs Ngwenya.
Mrs Sipho Green, a dependant, expressed her happiness at being enlightened about the programme, particularly after struggling to make ends meet since her husband’s death.

“This has been an eye-opener, and now we know where to go when we need assistance. We did not know that there was a provision for us to receive Government assistance,” said Mrs Green.
