THE Minister of Veterans of the Liberation Struggle Affairs, Cde Monica Mavhunga, has encouraged war veterans to share their concerns and ideas with the Government, emphasising that their input is vital in shaping policies and programmes that can significantly enhance their lives.
Speaking in Gweru last week during the official handover of 63 residential stands to marginalised veterans in the Midlands province, Minister Mavhunga reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to supporting ex-combatants through various empowerment initiatives.
She reminded the veterans of their constitutional right to Government assistance for their welfare, stressing that their voices matter.
“The Government is committed to addressing your needs,” she stated. “President Mnangagwa is a listening leader, dedicated to transforming your lives.”
Minister Mavhunga encouraged veterans to actively voice their concerns and suggestions, saying their contributions are invaluable in formulating policies that directly affect them.
“Together, we will confront any challenges that arise, drawing strength from the solidarity forged during our liberation struggle for independence,” she added.
Many war veterans have struggled to participate in mainstream economic activities due to disadvantages linked to the liberation war, including health issues and a lack of access to education in some sectors. However, the Second Republic has introduced various empowerment opportunities in mining, agriculture, and housing initiatives.
The Minister assured veterans that the allocation of residential stands represents a lasting investment and a step towards economic stability.
“Comrades, I want to stress that real estate is one of the most powerful resources for storing value,” she said. “Property ownership not only provides security and stability but also serves as a long-term investment that appreciates over time.”
She urged beneficiaries to take full advantage of this opportunity.
“By acquiring these stands, you are securing not just a home, but an asset that can contribute to financial stability for generations to come. The Ministry will ensure you receive the necessary support to develop your land.”
Concluding her remarks, Minister Mavhunga reiterated the Government’s commitment to uplifting war veterans.
“It is in this spirit that we gather today to witness the allocation of stands to you, veterans of the liberation struggle, many of whom have been without proper housing for years. This initiative directly targets marginalised comrades, ensuring that no veteran is left behind.”
