WAR VETERANS in Manicaland province were treated to a belated Independence Day dinner hosted by the Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Advocate Misheck Mugadza, on Thursday.
The event was sponsored by Discovery Ambulance Services.
ZANU PF Treasurer-General Cde Patrick Chinamasa, who was the guest of honour, thanked the organisers for appreciating the role played by war veterans in the country’s liberation.
“For businesses to thrive, they need peace and tranquillity. Unfortunately for us, we had to fight for a peaceful environment. It did not come on a silver platter,” he said.
Adv Mugadza said those who fought for freedom must be recognised and honoured.
“Colonialists resettled our parents in areas that had no minerals and did not receive enough rainfall to plant cash crops. We are forever thankful to our veterans of the liberation struggle, alive and fallen, for their selfless dedication and sacrifice towards attaining our independence,” he said.
“Their constituency remains a beacon of guidance to our body politic and must always be respected and honoured.”
Discovery Ambulance Services chief executive officer Mr David Munowenyu said war vets must be cared for by all of us.
“Peace-loving Zimbabweans must never take our war veterans for granted. Being able to operate a business in this country is one of the gains of the liberation that we must never reverse. By taking care of our war veterans, we are simply saying thank you for making it easy for us to jump certain hurdles that were tied to colonialism,” he said.
