Zhakata was arrested in Mozambique on Sunday night for fraud after he led a group of supporters on a drinking binge in which they accrued a US$1200 bill at a Maputo hotel, which they failed to settle.
The incident embarrassed Zifa, the Zimbabwe embassy officials in Mozambique who on Monday were trying to make frantic efforts to have him released from Mozambican police custody.
Zhakata had led a group of about 40 fans who travelled by bus from Harare to Maputo to support the Warriors in their World Cup qualifier against Mozambique, which finished 0-0.
Yesterday the supporters’ club issued a statement apologising for Zhakata’s behaviour but maintained that they would not lose focus on their bid to give the Warriors full support in their African Cup of Nations qualifier against Burundi at the National Sports Stadium.
Lynn Green, the association’s vice-president, also distanced her club from the behaviour of their leader.
“We as Warriors Friends Club would like to express our sincere apologies with regards to the issue that happened in Mozambique during an away assignment against the Mambas.
“However, we would like to distance ourselves as an association from personal behavior of members of the organisation and we advise you that our disciplinary committee is looking into the issue.
“The main objective of W.F.C is supporting our Warriors and we urge all the soccer loving fans to come out in their numbers to rally behind our Warriors on Sunday against Burundi in the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier, second round,’’ said Green.
Zhakata’s group recently came into the spotlight by claiming that they were the authentic national supporters club.
They have largely been viewed as a rival organ to the Zimbabwe National Soccer Supporters Association that is led by Eddie “Mboma’’ Nyatanga.
