WATCH: Hundreds evacuated after fire at Sterling Plaza in Bulawayo

A fire broke at Sterling Plaza building in Bulawayo City Cente on Tuesday evening as hundreds of SMEs were evacuated from the building.

The fire is believed to have started around 5PM the back of the first floor of the building that houses dozens of SMES who sell various goods like blankets, clothes, cellphones amongst other items. Sterling Plaza is along Jason Moyo, between 8th Avenue and Leopald Takawira Street.

Whilst the cause of the fire is still unknown, Precious Mugwidi who runs a shop on the ground floor said that the fire could have been caused by a someone who left a cigarette whilst some say it might have been an electric cable that sparked and ignited at the back part of the building.

Bulawayo Chief Fire Officer Mr Nhlangano Moyo said the fire was quickly contained by members the fire services department who had rushed to the scene.

No deaths or injuries were recorded.
