PRESIDENT Mnangagwa has revealed that former President Robert Mugabe passed away at a time when they had “smoked the peace pipe,” and said he continues to enjoy cordial relations with the former First Lady Grace Mugabe and former Vice President Joice Mujuru.

Speaking in an interview with the State broadcaster, Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation’s Chief Correspondent and veteran journalist Rueben Barwe, which aired on Wednesday, President Mnangagwa also shared insight into the character of the late former President.

“Mugabe was my boss, but he was also very strong-headed. If he made a decision, he stood by it. It was very difficult for him to be flexible,” President Mnangagwa said.

Reflecting on their relationship, he added:
“I think he was misinformed, because later on we discussed this and he said, ‘Ah Emmerson, I am sorry about what happened, this was the work of people.’ We had opened up to each other, totally.”

The President said the former First Lady has never hesitated to approach him for assistance when needed.

“There are no issues at all with Grace Mugabe. If she has any problems, she comes to me and I will solve them running,” he said.

President Mnangagwa reiterated that his relations with former Vice President Joice Mujuru remain friendly, describing them as old war comrades.

“I mean, we were together at war and we have no issues. We are comrades. People perceived that we would quarrel and do things, but to be honest, no,” he said.
