NEWLY promoted prisons and correctional services side, Whawha have intensified preparations for the new season and are set to take on Zifa Southern Region Division one outfit, Bulawayo Chiefs at Ascot Stadium tomorrow in a friendly match.

The Gweru-based side has relatively been quiet choosing to conduct its business at its base where they have been conducting trials and assessing players.

Whawha chairperson, Musa Ntonga said the match will be used to unveil some of the club’s new signings who will do duty for the club in the forthcoming season which is expected to roar into life at the beginning of March.

“We’ve moved a gear up with our preparations and on Sunday we will be taking on Bulawayo Chiefs at Ascot Stadium. We’re now at the peak of our preparations hence the friendly match will be used to assess the players that we have at the moment. This will give the chance to the technical department to see areas that need beefing up before we finalise our squad for the season,” she said.

Ntonga said the club will engage in “two or three” friendly matches with Premiership clubs before they finalise their squad for the season.

Entrance fees have been pegged at $3 for the grand stand while fans will fork out $1 for the rest of the ground.

Children will be admitted free of charge.

Ntonga called on Gweru football fans to come in their numbers to witness the game.

Said Ntonga: “We want to assure the people of Gweru that we are in the league to stay and they should come and witness a good match tomorrow as we prepare for the season.”

Players to watch out for are Caleb Masocha who was with ZPC Kariba and How Mine last season, goalkeepers Muzondiwa Gonese and Matthew Urayayi.

Former Shabanie Mine striker, Michael Mageja, Kenneth Bhuka and former Motor Action striker, Simbarashe Zimora are expected to feature for “Chekera Pasi” as the correctional services side is affectionately known.
