Ex-SuperSport United defender Ronald Pfumbidzai has revealed why he snubbed advances by Premier Soccer League clubs in South Africa as he settled for Zimbabwe’s first division.
Pfumbidzai mutually separated with the Gavin Hunt coached side SuperSport after the conclusion of the 2023/ 24 season. That was after making 16 appearances for the club in all competitions. FARPost understands that Kaizer Chiefs and Richards Bay FC were in talks with his agent at the time he left ‘Matsatsantsa a Pitori’.
The 29-year-old however, went on to join Scottland FC in Zimbabwe’s first division, the Northern Region Division One Soccer League. At Scottland, Pfumbidzai signed a short-term contract that will expire in December when the season ends.
In an interview with FARPost, Pfumbidzai opened up on what pushed him to snub advances by PSL clubs.
“There were offers at the table, but they were similar to what I was being offered back home [by Scottland]. It’s not really my area to comment, but I know a number of clubs want my services. However, the reason that contributed to this is that I have yet to receive my permanent residency papers. Those clubs wanted a local player, not a foreigner.
“The issue was about the foreign quota. The clubs that wanted my services needed a local. Unfortunately, my papers were not yet done. I applied in January with expectations that I will be able to get them in May but I only received the confirmation on the day I was set to sign for my current club. “So I signed a short-term contract with Scottland, which ends in December. I hope we will have helped the team get promoted,” Pfumbidzai told FARPost.
Pfumbidzai is eyeing a quick return to the Betway Premiership in South Africa in the January transfer window.
“Obviously, coming here has helped me get some game time. In the second half of the 2023/24 season at SuperSport, I had an injury. So my playing time had become limited; hence, coming here was the best option at the time. But obviously, I am working out something so that I can return to South Africa since my papers are all in place,” he added.
