Woman drags fellow villagers to court

A ZIMUNYA woman who has had enough of her fellow villagers’ incessant harassments after their relative was jailed for raping her three daughters , has approached the courts seeking refuge.

Judith Matsvai dragged Enock Panganayi, Peter Panganayi, Fungai Panganayi, Enock Dobo, Sarah Mariyana and Grace Magweta whom she accused of threatening, assaulting and harassing her at every chance given.

Ms Anniah Ndiraya presided over the matter.

Narrating her ordeal to the court, Matsvai said that the six were threatening to deal with her accordingly if she failed to go and withdraw their relative’s rape matter.

“As we speak, their relative was convicted of rape charges after he together with an accomplice raped my three minor children. I am now living in fear because these people come to my house day and night threatening to kill me if I do not withdraw the charges.

“Your Worship, just last month, they burnt my huts in the middle of the night and a neighbour had to take me and my kids in as we had nowhere to go and this was after they had promised to burn the huts if I did not withdraw charges,” cried Matsvai.

She also told the court that as they stood in as witnesses in court, Enock and Peter had told the court that she was a mental patient who was lying that her children had been raped.

“Since the medical reports showed that all my children had been raped, these people started accusing me of having raped my own children with a candle stick as they claimed that I was deranged.

“I had to provide psychiatric results that I was not a mental patient Your Worship and the doctors also proved that I was sane,” she said sobbing.

Defending himself, Enock Panganayi told the court that Matsvai was a well known liar in their village who just wanted to waste the court’s time by seeking the protection order.

Peter Panganayi told the court that Matsvai was a troublesome neighbour who was in the habit of verbally abusing them by praying aloud every morning on her yard.

“We have had enough of this violent woman who is always at odds with everyone in the village, even the headman knows her. Each morning she prays a loud abusive prayer calling us witches and wizards and I wonder why she has brought us here,” he said.

However, they did not dispute with the fact that their relative is currently serving a jail term after he raped Matsvai’s daughters which according to the Magistrate gave them reason to harass, threaten and assault her.

A protection order was granted to Judith Matsvai against Enock Panganayi, Peter Panganayi, Fungai Panganayi, Enock Dobo, Sarah mariyani and Grace Nyagweta.

They were ordered to stay in peace with her, breach of which will warrant their arrests.
