Monica Janure (39) was still in police custody and is expected to appear in court today.
Harare provincial police spokesperson Inspector James Sabau said officers at Avondale Police Station on Monday received a tip off that Janure was dealing in copper and swooped on her residence.
“Policemen had to jump over the security wall to gain entry into the yard after the occupants refused them entry into the premises. A search was conducted and they recovered 170kg of copper cables,” Insp Sabau said.
In November last year, Government said people who either vandalise or are found in possession of State power and communication equipment could soon be jailed for more than 10 years.
The regulations would require a police clearance certificate for transportation of power, communication, broadcasting and water equipment. Justice and Legal Affairs Minister Patrick Chinamasa said to effect these measures, Government would have to amend the Postal and Communications, Electricity, Railways, Broadcasting Services and the Criminal Procedure and Evidence Acts.
