A HARARE woman has clashed with her husband over her cultural beliefs.
Esnath Skoti believes in, and practices African tradition.
Her husband, Washington Mudzarurwi, is a Christian.
The matter came to light at the Harare Civil Court where Esnath applied for a protection order against Washington.
She accused Washington of verbal and emotional abuse.
“My husband insults me over my cultural beliefs.
“He has a habit of shouting at me on the street, saying I should remove my traditional attire from the house,” she said.
Esnath told the court Washington also chased away her sister, and their child, from their house.
“My sister is the one who takes care of our child while I am at work.
“My sister and child are currently staying at my uncle’s house.
“He comes home late, around midnight, and starts playing loud music.
“For the past six months, my husband and I have been sleeping separately,” she added.
In response, Washington told the court that he was totally against his wife’s cultural beliefs.
“I was told that her cultural practices will affect our child in future.
“She must not involve my child or bring any of her cultural practices into our home.
“Our home has now become a shrine where people converge to get help from her,” he said.
Magistrate Sharon Mashavire granted the protection order in Esnath’s favour.
