A HARARE woman has appeared in court after she was arrested for duping a local businessman of US$2 000 in a fake pregnancy and child maintenance claim.
Talent “Bhabhidho” Kwenda was facing extortion charges when she appeared before Harare magistrate Mr Tapiwa Kuhudzai.
Businessman, Pax Jemwa, catered for Kwenda during her supposed pregnancy and after she supposedly gave birth.
Jemwa was later tipped off by Kwenda’s friend that she was never pregnant and never had a child.
After her secret was exposed, Kwenda began threatening Jemwa that she would expose their affair to his wife.
Allegations are that on an unknown date, from February 2025, the accused person and the complainant, Jemwa, had an extramarital relationship.
The accused then told the complainant that she was pregnant with his child and started demanding the upkeep for the pregnancy.
The complainant started spending her money on her upkeep of the pregnancy until the time she was expected to conceive sometime in December 2025.
The accused told the complainant that she had given birth to a baby boy, whom she named Ronald.
It is alleged that the complainant demanded to see the child, but the accused started giving excuses and never showed him the child, but kept on demanding money from him.
The complainant allegedly received a tip-off from an unknown person that the accused had lied to him that she was pregnant because she never conceived.
The complainant then stopped giving her money, and the accused threatened to expose the complainant to his wife.
The complainant then made a police report and the accused was arrested. According to the police investigations, another victim was also duped out of his money after the accused lied that she had given birth to his twins and demanded money for the upkeep of the children.
The victim’s case is yet to be heard in court.
