POSSESSING Bronchclear, popularly known as Bronco, without a prescription, landed a Dangamvura woman in trouble after being arrested in connection with the offence.
Petronella Nyanguru (39) of House Number N402, Area C, appeared before Mutare magistrate Mrs Annie Ndiraya pleading guilty to the charges she was facing of possessing Bronchclear without a prescription as defined in Section 74(a) (1) of the Statutory Instrument 150/1991 or Section 67(1) of the Medicines and Allied Substance Control Act, Chapter 15.03 (found in possession of prescribed drugs without a prescription).
The court heard that on November 10 around 12pm police detectives who were on patrol were tipped that Nyanguru had Bronchclear which she was selling and they went to her house.
Upon arrival they saw the accused in possession of 2x100ml bottles of Bronchclear cough syrup and they asked for a prescription which she failed to produce leading to her arrest.
In her defence, Nyaguru said she wanted to treat a cough that was troubling her.
“Your Worship, I wanted to take the syrup as medication for my cough and I know what I did was wrong. I bought the syrup from a neighbour,” said Nyanguru.
Mrs Ndiraya said she risked going to jail by taking the syrup without a prescription from a doctor and that she was abusing herself as this would affect her body.
She was ordered to pay a fine of $50 or face 40 days imprisonment if she failed to pay by November 30.
