A 33-YEAR-OLD woman from Penhalonga has been convicted on her own plea of guilty and sentenced to two years in jail for stealing US$5 000 from her employer.

The convict, Shylet Maposa, of Redwing Mine Compound, appeared before Mutare magistrate Mrs Annie Ndiraya and pleaded guilty to theft as defined under Section 113(1)(a) of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform Act (Chapter 9:23).

Prosecutor Ms Tafadzwa Zulu told the court that the complainant, Sharlot Chinonzwa (28), who works for Better Brands Company at Redwing Mine, had left US$5 000 secured in her wardrobe.

“Maposa, who was entrusted with the keys to perform household chores by the complainant, took US$5 000 from the pocket of a jacket that was placed inside the wardrobe,” said Ms Zulu.

Maposa later confessed to spending part of the stolen money on family needs and paying US$1 300 to a traditional healer in Dangamvura, reportedly in a bid to evade arrest.

Maposa was arrested on July 8, 2025, and US$3 500 was recovered during police investigations.

Magistrate Ndiraya sentenced Maposa to 24 months in prison, and 14 months were suspended – seven of them on condition of good behaviour for five years, and the other seven condition of restitution of the remaining US$1500.

The remaining 10 months were set aside on condition that she performs 350 hours of community service at Tsvingwe Clinic.
