WOMEN have been urged to claim their space as key drivers of economic growth and community development, leveraging their influence and population advantage to bring about meaningful change.

Speaking during a belated Women’s Day commemoration and clean-up campaign in Gwanda recently, Gwanda mayor, Alderman Thulani Moyo, stressed the crucial role women play in various sectors of society, urging them to take the lead in development while also ensuring compliance with regulations.

“I would like to applaud the women in Gwanda for penetrating various sectors in the town and assuming leadership roles. I urge those who are still lagging behind to step up and actively participate in development initiatives,” he said.

“It is also important for women to support and uplift one another rather than pulling each other down.”
Alderman Moyo also called on women to take responsibility for maintaining a clean environment, as littering has become a growing concern in the town.

“The level of littering in Gwanda is alarming, and it does not present a good image of our town. Let us all police one another and ensure we keep our town clean,” he said.

The event began with a clean-up exercise at the Gwanda Town vendor’s market, reinforcing the message of environmental responsibility.

This year’s International Women’s Day commemoration is being held under the theme “For all women and girls: Rights, Equality, and Empowerment.” The theme highlights the urgent need for women’s empowerment, emphasising equal rights and opportunities for a more just and equitable society.

It also calls for actions that unlock opportunities for women and girls, particularly young women and adolescents, to become catalysts for lasting change.

The year 2025 marks the 30th anniversary of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, a landmark blueprint for achieving gender equality globally.

This theme aligns with ongoing United Nations efforts to accelerate progress toward gender equality and the advancement of women’s rights worldwide.

International Women’s Day is commemorated annually on March 8, serving as a platform to celebrate achievements while also reflecting on the work that remains in achieving gender parity.

Gwanda Municipality town clerk, Ms Priscillah Nkala, stressed the importance of women participating in events and initiatives that promote their empowerment.

“No matter how small a business is, it still contributes to the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP). As women, we must seize opportunities created for us to market ourselves and develop our potential.

“We chose to host this event at the vendor’s market because many women operate from here, demonstrating their significant role in driving the country’s economy,” she said.

Ms Nkala also stressed the importance of environmental consciousness among women, urging them to engage in environmentally friendly activities and mentor young girls for future generations.

Speaking during the same event, Ministry of Women Affairs, Community, Small and Medium Enterprises Development officer for Gwanda District, Ms Bridget Moyo, said the day is important in celebrating the success of women in various sectors, which include economic, social, and political sector among others.
She said it also plays a critical role in educating women on their rights.

“It also helps the country access its progress in the drive to empower women and to identify existing gaps,” said Ms Moyo. —@DubeMatutu
