WREXHAM suffered a final day full of twists, turns and drama as they agonisingly MISSED OUT on the play-offs.

The Welsh outfit knew pre-game victory would rubberstamp sixth spot and with that secure a shot at reaching the Premier League.

But despite picking up a point in a 2-2 draw with Middlesbrough, it wasn’t enough as Hull City defeated Norwich City to leapfrog the Red Dragons.

It was a three-way tussle on the final day to join Southampton, Middlesbrough and Millwall in the fight for the final promotion spot after Ipswich Town’s final day win.

And in the end it wasn’t to be for Wrexham as they face another season in England’s second tier next term.

The match got off to a flying start as Boro struck first through Tommy Conway before Josh Windass levelled with brilliant free-kick from 25 yards.

Sam Smith then headed home to send the home fans into a frenzy and turn the game on its head.

But within two minutes, Wrexham were pegged back with David Strelec getting on the scoresheet in a frantic first half of drama.

It was a more nervy second period for the home side, who knew they needed at least one more goal in order to end the regular season on a high and look to complete the incredible rise through the ranks.

Boro went close to grabbing a third of their own then Windass had a massive chance with four minutes left of the 90 but blasted high over the bar.

The away side then blocked a number of efforts as the home side went for it in search of that goal — but it wasn’t to be.

It’s often been a fairytale under Hollywood owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney — but that HUGE moment will be on hold for another 12 months.

It’s Championship football once again for Phil Parkinson and Co as the finish the campaign in seventh spot.

In the end, they fell two points shy of that top six finish they craved. — Sun
