Young innovators give back

A group of young innovators has given back to their community in form of a donation of over 150 textbooks to a local school with the aim of fostering academic resources and improving learning outcomes for students.

The group, which consists of Mike Lunga, Nigel Kashangura and Tinashe Rufu, executed a youth-driven community empowerment project focused on education as a catalyst for long-term societal transformation.

The textbooks were handed over to Zengeza 2 High School last Friday.

The trio highlighted that coming from a disadvantaged background does not translate into a shattered future, but can actually serve as a foundation for determination, innovation, and service to others.

Having gone through challenging academic and socio-economic conditions themselves, they have translated their personal journey into a structured effort to uplift others facing similar circumstances. They further stressed that education remains one of the most powerful tools for breaking cycles of poverty and inequality.

“We are inspired by our leaders who support the vulnerable and those in need.

“They remain our inspiration and motivation.

“As well, we have done exceptionally well in our communities, and we remain focused on the future despite some obstacles which may try to hinder us,” said Mike.

He also said that they have since graduated from Chitepo School of Ideology, where they learned the values of patriotism.

“These values encourage us to continue doing well for our society as philosophical values of Ubuntu.

“The donation covered a range of academic areas, including theology and other key curriculum subjects, and was received with appreciation by school authorities.

“The initiative reflects a growing trend of youth-led interventions that prioritise practical community development over passive awareness.

“We are also demonstrating that meaningful impact can be achieved through collective effort, discipline, and purpose-driven action even in the absence of substantial material resources,” he added.

The three young philanthropists emphasised that their initiative is grounded in lived experiences.

Nigel expressed that their guiding philosophy is rooted in humble beginnings.

“We have been helped by other personnel in our lives, and we wish to accord the same support to others.

“Every individual has a role to play in community advancement, regardless of scale, as even small contributions can have long-lasting impacts on future generations.

“We left home to change home, and this translates into helping others who are also focusing on changing where they are coming from.

“So, this gesture is about inspiring others who are also still at this stage,” he said.

Tinashe said the decision to contribute meaningfully to others is itself a form of leadership.

“The initiative is not positioned as a one-time event but as the beginning of a broader long-term vision.

“Zengeza 2 High School is only the starting point, and we intend to extend similar donation programmes to other schools in the future.

“The objective is to expand educational access across multiple institutions, guided by the belief that sustained intervention can contribute meaningfully to national educational development.

“The initiative also acknowledges the importance of support systems and collaborative effort.

“We recognise the assistance we received from Mertye Press Company and their support, which demonstrates the importance of partnerships between young innovators and established entities in achieving sustainable community impact,” he added.

Danai Madamombe, the librarian at Zengeza 2 High School, appreciated the kind gesture.

“This is an act of humanitarian and social responsibility by these young people.”
