ZEC opens 87 centres for Headlands,Hurungwe by-elections

THE Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) has announced the establishment of 87 voter registration and voters’ roll inspection centres for the Headlands and Hurungwe West constituency by-elections.

The by-elections are scheduled for June 10.

In a public notice, ZEC has established 50 centres, of which 40 are schools in Headlands and 37 for Hurungwe West.

The two constituencies fell vacant following the expulsion of Mr Didymus Mutasa together with his nephew, Mr Temba Mliswa from Zanu-PF and recall from National Assembly.

Mr Mutasa last week had his nomination papers rejected after posing as a Zanu-PF candidate. Mr Mliswa successfully filed his papers as an independent.

Zanu-PF candidate Cde Christopher Chingosho and two little known candidates, Mr David Mukunda of the National Constitution Assembly and an independent Albert Mukaratirwa, also had their papers accepted by ZEC.

ZEC said the curtains on the exercise that commenced on Tuesday will come down on April 20.

“It is hereby notified for general information that the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission has established a total of 87 registration and voters’ rolls inspection centres for the second phase of the voter registration outreach exercise for Headlands and Hurungwe West by-elections. The exercise is for the period of seven days running from April 14, 2015 to April 20, 2015. The centres will open from 7am daily during the seven-day period,” said the commission.

The commission said it would use the 2013 harmonised election voters’ rolls as the basis of the exercise and those whose names are already on it would not be re-registered.

Those wishing to register for the first time should bring an original copy of identity card, or a valid Zimbabwean passport and proof of residence.

For inspection purposes, voters should bring a national identity card or a valid Zimbabwean passport.

Headlands has eight wards, and ZEC established seven centres in Wards Six, Seven and 10; nine centres in Ward Eight; 10 centres in Ward 12; two centres in wards 32 and 34 and six centres in Ward 37.
