ZIMBABWE is set to send a six-member team of bodybuilders to the Arnold Classic contest at the Sandton Convention Centre in South Africa.
The competition will see athletes, from across the continent, battle for silverware from May 20-21.
Zimbabwe will be represented by six top bodybuilders, including reigning national junior men bodybuilding champion Aaron Musarurwa and Women Bikini Fitness champion, Nomathamsanga Phiri, who is currently based in South Africa.
Last year’s first runner-up in Men’s Physique up to and including 176cm, Genius Gwara, and the runner-up in Men’s Fitness, Justine Mututumusa, will also take part.
The Men’s Physique, over 176cm defending champion, David Weier, and Francois Nyashanu, will complete the six-member team.
It will be coached and managed by the veteran bodybuilder Givemore Marume.
Marume said preparations were underway and athletes were ready to compete.
“Preparations have been going on very well, I have been talking to all athletes and they seem to be right on point in terms of their preparedness.
“What we are just waiting for is the final polishing of their bodies in terms of their eating and training.
“They are also going to leave for South Africa a bit early so that they acclimatise with the current conditions in Johannesburg and after that I’m sure they will be ready for the stage,” he said.
The four time Zimbabwe Champion, one of the country’s most dedicated athletes, added:
“I’m sure they are all ready and they know what is at stake, because they have to look at the bigger picture because whatever they do is for themselves.
“We all know that such competitions are crucial in one’s career because it’s events like these that will help to enhance one’s career.
“I’m hopeful that after this competition, the athletes will see more doors of opportunities opening and they will surely never be the same once they do well on the international level.”
