I am homeless your Worship, man claims to evade maintenance

A HARARE man yesterday claimed he was a homeless beggar who lived in the Avenues’ sanitary lanes after being taken to court by his ex-wife for maintenance.

The man, only identified as Mr Beni, was hauled to court by his ex-wife, Lynette Matizanhawu, who demanded US$300 for their two kids.

Beni offered her $60 000 saying he was a street beggar.

He told the court that he was laid off from work four years ago and Lynnette didn’t need rentals as she stays with her father.

“Avenues residents send me to buy groceries for them and in return they give me Zim dollars.

“She should be paying me since she is working and earns US$400.

“I also have a brain tumour and suffer from arthritis, although I don’t have medical reports as yet,” he said.

Lynette said Beni’s offer was a joke as he knew that one of their kids needed special care.

She also disputed Beni’s claim that he was a homeless beggar.

“He is a hustler and one of his deals landed him a car. He pays rentals in the Avenues, which is an expensive area to live in.

“After we separated, I moved back home, but l pay rent and my salary is no longer enough to sustain us, “she said.

Magistrate Sharon Mashavira ordered Beni to pay US$100 and plus 50 percent fees directly to the kids’ school.

“The respondent didn’t dispute owning a car or living in the Avenues and he didn’t bring any evidence of his illness.

“Why offer $60 000 when you’re a beggar.

“This clearly shows that you’re not being truthful and the court finds it just for you to pay maintenance for the good of your children,” magistrate Sharon Mashavira said.
