ZIMBABWE is considering launching a National Sex Offenders Register to track individuals convicted of sexual offences.

Speaking at a meeting on the feasibility of the National Sex Offenders Register for Zimbabwe, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs permanent secretary, Vimbai Nyemba, said the issue of a National Sex Offenders Register is paramount as it touches the heart of justice and child protection systems.

She said in recent years, Zimbabwe, like many other countries, has faced a growing concern over the alarming rate of sexual violence, particularly against women and children.

“As the Government, we have a duty to ensure that our justice system is not only punitive but also preventive, safeguarding the safety and security of those at risk of sexual exploitation and abuse,” Nyemba said.

“This initiative is a critical component of Vision 2030 which serves as the Government’s blueprint for transforming Zimbabwe into an upper-middle-income economy by the year 2030.

“At the heart of this vision is a commitment to inclusive and sustainable development that uplifts all citizens, regardless of their background or circumstances.”

Nyemba said by establishing a comprehensive National Sex Offenders Register, they are taking a significant step towards fulfilling the vision and ensuring that the most vulnerable members of society are protected.
