Zim defender signs for English club

ZIMBABWEAN-born Everton defender Brendan Galloway has put pen to paper in a new deal that will keep him at Goodison Park until June 2020. This new contract comes just 16-months into his five-year contract that he initially signed when he moved to Merseyside, but that has been ripped up following his eye-catching progress for Roberto Martinez’s side. The 19-year-old has made 18 appearances since his move from MK Dons in August 2014.

An injury to Leighton Baines at the start of the season, which came when Luke Garbutt had moved on loan to Fulham, opened the door for Galloway allowing him to make 14 starts and also get an England Under-21 squad call-up and Martinez was effusive in his praise of the teenager recently.

“He has become a Premier League footballer,” said Martinez, who gave him his debut against West Ham last May. Describing Galloway as an incredible character who has “an elite brain and nothing fazes him”.

“It doesn’t faze him at all. The key with Brendan is making him an all-round left back and then an all-round centre-half, without seeing a centre-half playing as a left back or a left-back filling in at centre-half.’

Galloway expressed delight at committing to the fifth placed 2014/15 English Premier League finishers stating “this is a club that has got so much young talent and is moving forward. It’s great to be able to commit to being a part of that.” – online
