Zim has talent: PSC

Zimbabwe has skills, a lot of qualified people and the Public Service Commission (PSC) starting next year will introduce a trainee programme that attracts young graduates, chairman of the PSC Dr Vincent Hungwe has said.

He was speaking at the Job Fair organised by the PSC in Harare today which attracted thousands of graduates below 30-years willing to join the public service.

Several graduates thronged the Heritage Village, Liberation City in Harare and interacted with all Government ministries, the Office of the President and Cabinet, and PSC to get information on their chances for recruitment.

After the fair, numerous shortlisted candidates will be interviewed and get the chance to be employed while the others will be contacted as and when vacancies arise.

Dr Hungwe said they are seeking to rejig, reformulate strategies on how to more effectively engage in a more intensive and extensive fashion.

“We want to ensure that apart from just inviting these youngsters to come and participate at this fair, we are going to introduce a deeper and wider system of internships and graduate trainee programmes,” said Dr Hungwe.

“What we have noticed here, we almost always assume that there are no skills in this country, the skills are there.

“There are a lot of exciting young engineers, young graduates in Information Communication and Technology that are willing to become part of the Governmental system as we try to modernise the way we do business as Government.

“I think we are going to start January next year with a new graduate trainee programme that invites young graduates from universities in different sectors of work and are going to be engaged for two years and thereafter to be placed in different sectors of the public domain,” said Dr Hungwe.

Several young graduates who spoke to The Herald were optimistic of getting a chance to be employed within the public service.
