Zim lose in Shield final

GLASGOW. — Wales defeated Zimbabwe 8-5 in the Homeless World Cup soccer tournament’s Shield final on Saturday.

In a fast-paced game, the Welsh Army soared ahead in a thrilling, nine-goal first half. Zimbabwe fought hard, making attempt on attempt against the Welsh keeper. They converted a penalty just seconds from half time, but the 7-2 score remained in Wales’ favour.

Determined Zimbabwe shot back at the Welsh dragons seconds into the second half. The Scottish reserve player, who had joined in for the Zimbabwe team throughout the week, scored their third goal of the match, and an own goal left the score at 8-4 with minutes to go.

Zimbabwe would go on to score another, but Wales started as they intended to go on and emerged victorious with an 8-5 score.

The curtain came down on the Homeless World Cup in Glasgow on Saturday, with both the Mexican men and women’s soccer teams taking home the silverware and retaining their titles.

More than 50 teams, including Zimbabwe, took part in the 14th tournament, which was described as a “wonderful success” by the organisers, the Homeless World Cup Foundation, which was set up to support and inspire homeless people through the sport.

The president and founder of the Homeless World Cup, is Mel Young, who is recognised as one of the world’s leading social entrepreneurs. The Scot co-founded the Big Issue magazine in Scotland in 1993.

The next Homeless World Cup will be held in Oslo, Norway, next summer. — The Guardian.
