ZIMBABWE has sent a delegation to observe the presidential, parliamentary and provincial elections in Mozambique being held on Wednesday next week.

Zimbabwe’s Ambassador to Mozambique Victor Matemadanda said SADC member states had sent observers and more were still coming.

“Every SADC member state is sending its team in two categories, short-term observers and long-term observers,” said Ambassador Matemadanda.

Some political parties are also sending their election observers.

Zanu PF has already sent its team of observers led by Politburo member Cde James Makamba.

“On the political parties’ side, yes there is a delegation that is coming from Zanu PF,” Ambassador Matemadanda said.

He confirmed that election campaigns are going on very well in Mozambique.

“Generally, the campaigns are very peaceful. All the political parties are marching through the streets, singing and sloganeering as they garner support. The popularity of Frelimo cannot be questioned. Their campaign rallies are overwhelming. There is so much visibility of Frelimo in all the provinces even in areas that used to be dominated by Renamo and also MDM in Beira,” said Ambassador Matemadanda.

Frelimo presidential candidate Francisco Chapo will be battling with it out with independent candidate Venancio Mondlane, RENAMO candidate Ossufo Momade and the Mozambique Democratic Movement (MDM) candidate Lutero Simango.

The winning candidate will deal with the protracted insurgency in the oil and gas rich Cabo Delgado province.

Cde Chapo is seen as the frontrunner. Whoever wins will be Mozambique’s fifth democratically elected leader.
