Zim sports has potential: Peter Mawere

Z-Score chief executive, Peter Mawere, said sport in Zimbabwe has the capacity to become a multi-million dollar industry if associations and the corporate world find a working relationship.

Tomorrow, Z-Score will host a sports marketing forum in the capital where sports associations and marketers have will exchange notes.

“The conference is about giving information and networking between business and sports sectors. We have realised that Zimbabwe sports had lots of opportunities for growth.

“At the moment there are several companies that are willing to be involved in marketing their products and services through sport but do not know whom to approach.

“From our preliminary research, we have found out that companies want sport associations to account for every cent received but this has not been the cases with some associations,” said Mawere.

During the indaba, Mawere said various local and international speakers will address participants on how to sell their products as brands.

“Traditionally, an integral part of the conference is the networking sessions that facilitate effective interaction between the sponsorship triangle – buyer, seller and agency,” said Mawere.

“This conference might not be as big as Soccerex but we are hoping to bring nearly 100 participants.
“We also have people from the Zimbabwe Tourism Authority who will dwell on the concept of sports tourism.

“Zimbabwe has hosted various international sports events and associations should be able to generate revenue at the end of such competitions,” he said.

Tomorrow’s meeting will be a follow up to a similar seminar held in conjunction with the National University of Science and Technology last year.

“Sports association and business need to define where we stand today and where we want to go.
“There is also need to devise ways of reaching the targets and we will make follow-ups on the participants to see how they will be conducting their business in future,” said Mawere.
