Zim women’s cricket off to disappointing start

Captain Sharne Meyers had won the toss and chosen to bat but the girls struggled to put runs on the board and were dismissed for 145 runs in their allotted 50 overs. In reply Netherlands put on a superior batting display led by Kerry-Anne Tomlinson and Miranda Veringmeier chasing down the target in just 25.2 overs. Zimbabwe’s batting was disappointing and Nonhlnhla Nyathi was the top scorer with 29 runs. Opener Sinikiwe Mpofu contributed 21 runs before falling to off-spinner Esther Lenser, who was Netherlands’ most successful bowler yesterday. Early wickets pegged them back and they were never able to put together decent partnerships as they found themselves reeling at 7-102 following Nyathi’s the departure, with 40.2 overs gone. Even though the innings lasted till the penultimate ball of the 50th over, they only managed 145 in a slow scoring innings.
Netherlands’ bowlers shared the wickets around, with offspinner Esther Lanser bagging figures 3-17 from 10 overs while Leonie Bennett and Tomlison had two apiece.
The chase got off to a rapid start, with Miranda Veringmeier scoring a run-a-ball 47 and captain Helmien Rambaldo smacking 30 off 24 balls.
They were dismissed in quick succession but Kerry-Anne Tomlinson took Netherlands home. Zimbabwe will play Sri Lanka in their next match.
