The Ministry of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture has expressed deep sorrow following the death of three Highlanders Football Club executive committee members in a road accident.
In a statement on Friday, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry, Nicholas Moyo, said they learnt of the deaths with shock and sadness describing the tragedy as a major loss to Highlanders and Zimbabwean football.
“On behalf of the Honourable Minister Lt Gen (Rtd) Anslem Sanyatwe, the Deputy Minister Emily Jesaya, the Ministry staff and the entire sport, recreation, arts and culture fraternity, I extend our deepest and heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families, Highlanders Football Club, the Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA), the football community, supporters and all those affected by this tragic loss,” said Mr Moyo.
The Ministry said the three leaders had dedicated themselves to the development of Highlanders, one of Zimbabwe’s most historic football institutions.

Their deaths come as Highlanders marks their centenary year, turning what was meant to be a major celebration of the club’s 100 years of existence into a period of mourning.
Additionally, the Ministry said the contribution of the three administrators to sport would be remembered for generations.
“During this difficult period, the Ministry stands in solidarity with Highlanders Football Club, ZIFA and the entire football fraternity,” Mr Moyo said.
The ministry extended its condolences to the bereaved families and all those affected by the tragedy, praying for strength, comfort and peace during the difficult period.
The deceased are club chairman Kenneth Mhlophe, vice-chairman Fiso Siziba and treasurer Nkani Khoza. A Highlanders member and supporter Mbalenhle Sibanda also died in the accident.
