Zimbabwe-Iran tractor assembly plant preps at advanced stage

point are now at an advanced stage after the host  company, Motira Tractors, unveiled a new site last week.
The assembling plant was launched last year by the Iranian President Mahommad Ahmajinejad.

Motira Tractors has acquired land in Harare’s Willowvale industrial areas where the plant will be constructed.
Speaking after touring the assembly plant site, Iranian ambassador to Zimbabwe Mr Mohammad Pournajaf said the establishment of the assembly plant was a testimony of the strong relationship between Zimbabwe and Iran.

“This development is important to the two countries,” he said.
“The Iranian government through its Official Developmental Association has released US$3,5 million to assist with the transportation of tractors and implements from Iran to Zimbabwe.
“It shows our support for the Zimbabwean land reform programme and empowerment of indigenous people. We hope the plant will contribute to the economic development of this country.”

Mr Pournajaf said 12 technicians from Zimbabwe were sent to Iran for training on assembling and maintenance of tractors.
“Two Iranian experts have also come to Zimbabwe to assist with technical expertise,” he said.
“We do not believe in giving people fish but in teaching them how to fish.”

The plant will also serve as a training ground for local tertiary institutions. Mr Pournajaf said students in mechanics at universities and colleges would be free to visit the plant to familiarise with tractors and get free training.

Motira managing director Mr Hossein Fazlollahi said his company engaged banks to avail funds that would see farmers buying tractors on credit.
“Under the scheme, farmers will pay an initial deposit of 30 percent of the price and pay the rest in 24 months,” he said.
“Farmers should have adequate knowledge on the tractors and Motira is prepared to offer training.”

Mr Fazlollahi said the Motira tractors would benefit mostly the agriculture, mining and transport sectors.
The project is set to see the land reform strengthen.
