Zimbabwe sail past Bangladesh in T20 warm-up

For a team that has not played international games for over four months, this was probably the kind of preparation the home side needed for the series, which starts tomorrow at Harare Sports Club, when they get the ball rolling against Bangladesh.

The other team in the series, South Africa, are expected to arrive tomorrow.

Zimbabwe have been in camp for the past six weeks and hope to use the series as part of their preparations for the Twenty20 World Cup, since they do not have an international assignment before September when the tournament takes place.

Taylor yesterday said Zimbabwe are looking forward to the series with confidence after the select side beat the visitors by three wickets in the morning before holding on to a 19-run victory later in the day in the second match.

Taylor said the wins might not mean much and reckoned Zimbabwe would need to improve when they face Bangladesh in the opening match of the series tomorrow.

“I think we got the momentum but it will be a different thing on Sunday because Bangladesh have a strong squad that is capable of beating any team.

“They can bounce back on any day,” said Taylor.

The home team had not played any form of cricket since February when they toured New Zealand and are hoping to capitalise on the series to prepare for the Twenty20 World Cup.

Coach Alan Butcher had his work made a little bit easier ahead of the series following the double victory, which should have gone a long way to lift the morale in the camp. The warm-up games usually feature fringe players but Zimbabwe opted to play their top players, who are also likely to start tomorrow.

The selectors probably wanted to give them a jolt since they have been inactive for over four months.

Graeme Cremer and top order batsman Hamilton Masakadza produced matchwinning performances in both games.

Cremer, in particular, had an outstanding all-round performance in the first match with four wickets to his credit and a batting contribution of 30 runs, unbeaten from 24 balls, as Zimbabwe select XI chased down Bangladesh’s127 runs to claim victory.
